The Important People of Rapture

The Minds That Make Rapture What It Is

"It appears to me that I have somehow become the runt of the medical community. This is no such place for a man of such passion and skill. What I can do with the blade, is what one in a million can do with anything. It doesn't surprise me Ryan turned his back on me like he's done to the whole city. It seems Ryan has a lot on his hands, but maybe that's Fontaine doing what he does best. I came down here to do one thing, and that was to turn this so called society into something worth smiling about. Now look at the mess I'm caught up in."

Audio Journal:

Endnotes: I wanted to create an audio journal that sounded like it could be from the actual game. Throughout the game you can collect audio journals to learn more about certain characters, so I decided to make one for a really creepy and insane character, and took lots of inspiration from in game audio for the text. My friend Jack did an actual audio recording which was a really nice touch for this. All work is original and inspired from the game itself.

About J.S. Steinman:

Asked by Andrew Ryan himself to become the lead surgeon down in the Medical Pavillion in Rapture, he creates beauty from only his fingers. Although he may be busy fixing someone up so they can go out feeling beautiful again, he spends his time finding new ways to enhance his procedures and methods!

Dear fellow citizen of Rapture,

My name is Anthony Rudd. I'm 45 and come to you with a message and a warning. At this point in time I have made it to the surface, and I hope to lead you the same way if you will hear my story. If you are reading this, you found part 1/4 of my biography in the Welcome Center, and I have made it out of the city and aim to bring you back up too.

Many years back I got invited by a couple buddies of mine to come to a city by the name of Rapture. I was a city boy living in New York, and I owned a very successful show club. Now at first an underwater city to me sounded ridiculous, and the man in charge sounded even more ridiculous. You see, the man by the name of Andrew Ryan only wanted the best of the best. He invited only the most brilliant and important people on the surface (the world above water), to live and thrive in his city. And I was one of them. I didn't think much of it and was hesitant, but my friend Pete convinced me and I headed on down.

I remember taking the sub down on opening day. It was the 1940's and times were thriving. Throughout the day there were amazing displays of the city and what it would become, but as we all know now, it ain't too nice down there anymore. I had always been interested in business and the potential it had, but something seemed off about Ryan's philosophy.

I heard some city folks talking about this idea called "objectivism". I never heard of such a thing, and I wanted to know more about it. Rumors spread, and I found out from some coworkers that it was what Ryan had based his whole city off of. It was an idea created by Ryan that he wanted to keep to himself. I knew upon entering that this was a place that was meant for people who wanted total freedom in their sales, and what they profited. Nobody disagreed with this philosophy, but some people took advantage of this idea. apparently there are five branches of objectivism: metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, and aesthetics. Ryan uses the political side of objectivism. A man by the name Frank Fontaine took advantage of the discovery of ADAM and went to town. ADAM was discovered by some fancy scientists down in the labs. It was basically a liquid you injected that could let you change your genes and have super human powers. Things got out of hand and some of its negative side effects started to show. People needed ADAM to function normally, and Fontaine took advantage of this. We called these addicts "splicers". There was a whole industry built off of it, and people started to become more mad by the day. People did whatever it took to get ADAM, even harm the poor little sisters, but that didn't go too well with the big daddies. In case you wanted to know, a "Little Sister" is a genetically modified little girl that's created in a lab to harvest ADAM. It sounds terrible and it is. They're basically drug addicts that are cooked up to obtain the stuff, and the innocence of them made no one want to steal ADAM from them. A "Big Daddy" is their protector that's also made in a lab. His only job is to fix things around the city, and to protect his little sister when she's harvesting ADAM from a splicer. Be careful around them, they're easy to notice. They're the only one's in huge scuba suits.

This idea Ryan had, crumbled. Fontaine rose to the top, and mad men took over the city. The problem with it was Ryan didn't have an open mind to failure, or new ideas. He was stuck in his ways, and focused on reality, that's it. I guess that objectivism is focused on now and not later, and self worth and success. Ryan had no reason or a way to explain what he was making his judgments with, he was focused on the perspective of himself. There were no feelings attached. Fontaine faked his own death and took the name of Atlas, who was later defeated by a young lad named Jack. If you're down there, please find the other pages of this biography and listen to what I have to say. I've hidden the other pages in Fort Frolic, and Neptune's Bounty, and Medical Pavilion. Those are three large landmarks in Rapture. For as long as Rapture is down there, but for now please follow these steps. Stay in locked areas of the city, find as many resources around town as you can, find a gun, and do whatever it takes to get ADAM. Good luck,

Endnote:

I wanted to create a biography from someone lived down in Rapture, and the horror that came with it. I think that the situation in the game is fake, because a drug called Adam doesn't exist, and an underwater city doesn't exist either, but a very real concept makes it seem real. Ryan is the fictional Ayn Rand, but feels even more real when playing. I used a lot of info from the article, "Here's What's Wrong with Ayn Rand's Philosophy" (Biddle), "Column: This Is What Happens When You Take Ayn Rand Seriously" (Cummings), "The Rewriting of Ayn Rand's Spoken Answers" (Campbell), "The Logic of Liberty: Aristotle, Ayn Rand, and the Logical Structure of the Political Spectrum" (Bissell). There a lot of people who could remind us of Ryan. He's just a man with an idea, and has no sympathy for people who have not achieved what he believes to be "right". It's a standard of living that takes away any freedom of choosing what you want to be, even though the whole point of objectivism is creating yourself. Being caught up in it would be terrible.

About Sander Cohen:

Sander Cohen is the lead painter, sculptor, dancer, and musician in Rapture. He uses the aesthetic side of objectivism to make art a significant part of Rapture. He's changed the game for the artist, and influences more and more minds everyday. You can find him at Fort Frolic, where he performs!
